Our First Event!

This weekend saw the delivery of Visit Lincs Coast (Lincolnshire Coastal Bid) first in-house event ‘World Ocean Day Sand Sculpting Weekend’

The event kicked off on Friday 8th June which was the official World Oceans Day. Throughout the day we had four workshops involving school children of a variety of ages from Mablethorpe Primary School and also St Helena’s in Willoughby who had been learning all about the pollution of our ocean and the risks that are involved. Each workshop started with a briefing from Anglian Water which explained what we can and cannot put down our toilets and where this all ends up in the end… our seas! This was then followed by a demonstration from ‘Sand In Your Eye’ our professional sand sculptor’s to the children and then they were all let loose to design whatever their imagination saw fit.

With over 150 school children attending on the Friday many of them returned with their families to show off their new skills over the duration over the weekend. We had over 1000 visitors to this event which created a bustling atmosphere along the foreshore.

The Lookout Café Owner Dennis Lound wrote on Facebook

‘Superb event that attracted many visitors to the Promenade. It kept youngsters entertained for many hours and parents enjoyed it too. BRILLIANT’

Over the course of the Saturday and Sunday we had The Lincolnshire Wildlife trust demonstrating ‘How Long until its Gone’ which highlighted how long it takes for items such a straws and plastic bottles to decompose and also a sea dip where they dragged nets along the shoreline and identified what was found as part of their 30 Day Wild campaign which was a huge hit with not only the children but adults as well!

Mad Science joined us for the Saturday putting on explosive shows throughout the day which turned science into a fun interactive lesson touching on micro plastics and Anglian Water’s ‘Keep it Clear’ Campaign. The Sunday finished the weekend off nicely with the ultimate Sand Sculpting Competition where more than 60 people got stuck in for 2 hours to complete their masterpiece. With 5 categories all winners took home goody bags filled with environmentally friendly prizes such as Eco Cups, metal straws, recycled lunch boxes and much more.

All in all, a great event which attracted hundreds of visitors to Mablethorpe and filled the beach with creativity.

Lee Roberts Event Manager and Project Co-ordinator for Lincolnshire Coastal Destination Bid said:

‘The event was a huge success and gave us the opportunity to interact with local levy-payers and really highlight the assets which Mablethorpe have to offer, I would like to say a big thank you to our sponsors and everybody who got involved and supported the event over the weekend’
