A Visit to Grandma’s

I am a very lucky 9 year old! My Grandma lives just a mile from the sea in a town called Mablethorpe. When we go and visit her, we always get to stay a few nights and enjoy all the ‘seasidey’ things on offer.

It might be quite chilly in March but as long as you have got a warm coat and a hat there is no excuse – the beach is just as excellent in the winter as it is in summer!

Last weekend my mum, sister and I went for a visit. We took our dog too. You can see miles and miles of sand in every direction on the beach (if the tide is out). Our dog loves it and she ran for hours; down to the sea and back again…a lot. One of my favourite things to do is walk along the tide line. I collected so many different types of shells, I saw crabs, starfish and I even found a mermaid’s purse! When we needed a rest we went up into the sand dunes and hid from each other.

After our beach walk we went to see a friend of my Mums who has a farm. As well as running the farm she makes her own ice-cream. It’s called Farmer Browns and isn’t too far from Mablethorpe. You should try their ultimate hot chocolate, followed by lemon meringue ice-cream. Mum ALWAYS takes a tub home with us. Grandma often takes us to Farmer Browns, I think she goes quite a bit for cake…the owner even knows her name!

This particular visit we had lunch at Dave’s Diner. It was market day and the whole high street was blocked off, there were so many different stalls.

We didn’t go up to the fair on the pullover this time. In the summer it is a lot of fun, trampolines and hook a duck are my favourite. Most summers we rent a beach hut on the seafront for a day. My other grandparents come, as well as my aunty and cousins. We spend the day building sandcastles, eating chips and donuts and going on the train ride in Queens Park. If you don’t fancy paddling in the sea then you can play in the paddling pool – much warmer and less fish (usually). I liked it best when we had a beach hut close to the lifeboat station – you can go and look around the lifeboat.

For my birthday we went to the Seal Sanctuary and Wildlife Centre. It is built into the sand dunes and they have so many animals. The kind people there take in poorly seals and nurse them until they can be released back into the sea. As we were leaving, an animal ambulance turned up and I was allowed to look inside. Wrapped up in a blanket was the tiniest, fluffiest baby seal that I’ve ever seen. He had been orphaned and the sanctuary had agreed to take him in. I can’t wait to go back and find out how he is doing.

I think you will agree, I am a lucky 9 year old. You should come and spend a day (or three). The fresh air will do you good, if you take a rest in the sand dunes just keep a look out for my sister, cousins and me as we could well appear from nowhere ‘burning off energy’ as my Grandma would say!
